Simulation with ShatterSkript

Hey,

I'm posting a quick simulation today. I've written a skript for Maya to shatter any object into pieces. Those pieces are cubes and not built from randomized geometrie! Maybe it's useful for Motion-GFX or very fast destruction-scenes. It's basically been written to learn the Maya Python API and not to serve a real purpose. Though it's still a bit buggy it can be used and works as planned.
A friend of mine asked me to shatter a teddy so I took the one I made for the ugly pet and destroyed it. Not that nice, considering that the pet isn't really on the bright side of life anyway...
Excuse the simulation, it's a test and I actually should have learned for my oral exam instead of messing 'round in Maya :(

Watch it here:

Vimeo killed the quality. Gonna upload a better version soon...

Here are two more of the tests:

Feel free to write a comment if you like and if anyone's interested I'll fix the bugs after the exam and make the skript public.

Christmas

Hey,

it's been a while and there's no real update on the ugly pet since I've been busy with other stuff. Instead of some lighting tests I uploaded a vfx-piece that I've been working on as 3D-Supervisor in the first semester:

Watch it in HD: http://vimeo.com/2609800

I did the set-extension and the floating things except for the smoke. Greetz to everybody who worked on this :)

Merry Christmas everybody and see you next year!

After some texturing...

Hey everybody,

here are a few more renderings you might like to check. None of the textures are finished yet but at least I got a solid base that I can continue with. I'm pretty proud of having used only self-made pieces to build up the shaders. The skin of the poor little guy is actually the paring of a mango which I scanned and cleaned. There still are a few seams on his body but those will disappear soon ;) I also did some hi-res scans of leather which I'll blend into the mango-stuff to get some variation.
I'm going to make over the mask completely and give his armor a bit more rust and dirt in some areas. So far the rust is just a test of how I can get good results with completely different materials blended into each other.
The teddy is made with hi-res scans of rough fabric that used to be my advent calendar and dirt I found in the garden ;)

I think that the next step I'll take is to light the scene roughly to get to know which parts of the textures need more detail and which will be dark anyway. My lighting tests will be posted here soon I hope. Probably I have to wait till I get home to Stuttgart to have a better computer than this one which only lets me work with bounding boxes ;) Not the best circumstances to do lighting, right?

If there's anybody who wants to use any of the photographies or scans I made for this piece, -you can just send me a note and I'll make them available.

I just update my LinkedIn profile. On the right side is a link for everyone who is interested. Feel free to contact me via one of the eMail-adresses that are available there.

Twitter is a really cool thing, check it out if you haven't! It's nice to notice what others are doing or thinking. Aaaand: It works with my new Ipod!
Really fell in love with the little thing at first sight. Listening to music seem to be the least fun part of it ;) Gonna have to find a solution how to access internet while being in university. Today I finally got AirSharing to work after updating vista. I don't like vista at all...

That's it for today! Did I mention I went to watch "The Dark Knight" again? Still stunning...

First Render

Hey guys,

here's another update. After some frustration caused by the fact that ZBrush just didn't export my UVs I got my shaders set up and render correctly. By now it's just a quick test with colors and stuff.

At the moment I'm trying to figure out how to design the supermarket. I somehow don't like this usual blocky design and I'd like to have something more futuristic in a way... On the other hand it's gonna be pretty dark and you'll probably won't see a lot of it. Something that I'd like to avoid as I've mentioned in my last post... We'll see.

I finally saw Speed Racer a few days ago. Damn, I admire their courage to do something like this, but... I don't know. Remember those scenes with the monkey and the kid jumping through strange, colored lines and having a really thick outline? What the hell? I have to admit that I'm no fan of animes anyway so those shots really took me out of the (strange) movie. But I loved the carshading :) Digital Domains work is just awesome.

So much for the moment. Updates are about to come pretty soon, I hope ;)

Second Post - Sculpting Update

Hey out there,

here's just a quick update on the poor robopet. Just screenshots so far but I hope I've set up a render till next week.
I think I've finished sculpting so far and will turn to texturing soon. I think first I'm gonna set the scene in Maya and add additional stuff such as the leash and the eyes. At the moment I see a supermarket in the background and I'm not really sure about the DOF and the focal length. Basically I'd like people to be able to recognize that it's a supermarket but hey, a narrow depth of field is always nice. Think I do some testrenders... It's probably pretty important to get that it's a supermarket since otherwise you might not understand the story... Thought about naming the piece something like "Another day they'd just forget about him". Damn, is that gramatically correct? Native speakers, help!

Blogging seems to be a nice thing to ensure that you really think about the things you're doin' and why you're doin' them. :)

Something else. I went watching "The Dark Knight" yesterday. Holy crap, one of the best I've seen in a while. Heath Ledger deeply impressed me. It's a pity there won't be any more movies with his participation... Did they really did the truck-stuff as live-action? Must have been awesome to be on set that day. I'd really like to see some behind the scenes stuff. There must have been somebody with a handycam capturing those faces staring at the truck :) If anybody finds a link to some background info post it down there please!

Found twitter to be a cool thing and hope to get used to updating it frequently. If you'd like to follow: https://twitter.com/MattiG

First Entry - First Blog ever!

Hey everybody!

This is the first post in my first blog :) A few days ago I downloaded Flock and since then I started to setup all those stuff that Flock supports. That's why you'll find me at Twitter, Pownce, Facebook etc. and if you want to, feel free to contact, follow or add me to your friendslist. :)

I'm gonna use this blog as a possibility to show my work and get contact to people interested in the same things as I am. Feel free to subscribe to the RSS if you want to stay in touch (something very easy using Flock - you see I've become a fanboy in just a few days!).

So, to begin with, here's what I'm working on at the moment:

I'm currently in the sculpting-stage and hope to get this finished by the end of my vacations.

The basemesh is modeled in Silo. Then I did a quick rig in Maya and posed it this way. UVs in UVLayout by headus, a great tool for a very quick UV-Setup! The eyes will be added in Maya...

The story is the following:

This poor guy has been caught by a family of robots and since they thought that he's incredibly ugly and should look more like them he has been put into this little piece of armor. It's gonna be pretty rusty and old to show that he isn't treated well at all. This particular still I'm working on shows him being left again at a parking lot, holding a leash (?) and waiting for the robots to come back and pick him up. I think it's gonna be a nightscene...

So if anybody should stumble over this blog please let me know what you think, C&C is always welcome. :) Btw, this has been posted using Flock ;)

Greetz,

Matti
